RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS To Receive Artist Contribution Award

Multi-platinum selling musical artists RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS will be presented with the Artist Contribution Award at the second annual ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards Fueled by Mountain Dew, it was announced today by Ron Semiao, ESPN vice president, programming and managing director, Global X. The pioneer event that unites the hottest action sports athletes, musical artists and Hollywood celebrities will be held Saturday, April 13 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, Calif. The RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS will also perform at the event, marking the first time the band has played a U.S. venue in more than a year.

"THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS have been an influential part of the skate culture for many years," Semiao explained. "Street skateboarders listened to them in the eighties when the action sports genre wasn't even developed. Today, athletes from all disciplines are listening to CHILI PEPPERS CDs as they take their sports to new levels. We are thrilled to honor them as an influential band to the action sports movement. And we very much look forward to their performance at the Action Sports and Music Awards."

METALLICA received the Action Sports & Music Awards Artist Contribution Award last year, an event that featured musical performances by BLACK SABBATH, BEN HARPER & the INNOCENT CRIMINALS, CRAZY TOWN, DE LA SOUL featuring BUSTA RHYMES and INCUBUS. Announcements concerning additional musical artists and celebrity presenters for 2002 are forthcoming.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS have continually innovated the rock music world for nearly two decades through their unique fusion of funk, punk and rock influences. Their most recent release, Californication (1999),produced the smash hits, "Scar Tissue", "Otherside" and "Californication". In 2000, the band won a Grammy Award for "Scar Tissue" (Best Rock Song). The album also landed the band a Grammy in 2001 for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Other hit records on Warner Brothers include the multi-platinum selling Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) that turned out multiple top songs, and One Hot Minute (1995),which is also platinum. The band is currently in the studio recording its ninth album, which is scheduled for release this summer.

The ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards Fueled by Mountain Dew is the first show that fuses the top action sports athletes and cutting-edge musical artists in the forum of an awards show. The event will take place April 13, 2002, and the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with the original telecast on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 on ESPN at 9:00 p.m. ET. Throughout the evening, awards will be presented to athletes and artists who have shaped and continue to change the sports of the new millennium.
